ADVICE IN WRITING OF ACADEMIC TEXTS
Numerous degree courses and, above all, postgraduate courses, culminate with the submission of a thesis as a requirement to obtain the diploma. In many of these cases (especially in postgraduate studies) the subjects are approved through the writing of monographs. One of the main problems faced by many students in these courses is that the careers themselves assume that they have sufficient skills to face these difficult writing challenges and do not offer them any training in this regard.
I know from my own academic experience how difficult it is to write a thesis. I am the author of a thesis of degree (awarded with its publication) and of a postgraduate thesis (qualified as Outstanding, that is in stage of adaptation to be published). In addition, I have directed (and currently lead) a dozen thesis projects in the career of Communication Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires. I put all this experience, together with an interdisciplinary team of professionals and specialists in different areas and theoretical disciplines available to those who find it difficult to put in writing the results of their progress and research.
The writing of a thesis (such as a monograph or an academic article) is a long, arduous and complex process, but one that is greatly facilitated when there is personalized follow-up and advice, as well as a clear methodology that allows the progress to be made. , findings and successes of the research project on which it is based.
4 Correction of essays
CORRECTION OF TEXTS
The correction is the final phase of the production process of a book. On the one hand we have the style correction and on the other, the orthotypographical correction.
The correction of style is made by the author with the editor or with the help of another writer. It is always advisable that the author is not alone in this process, since an external and experienced look will allow him to identify and solve problems in the text before it becomes a book and can no longer be modified. The main difference between the correction of style and the work clinic is that in the first the writing process is considered completed, while in the second it is still open to all kinds of modifications.
The style correction includes the unification of the tone of the text, the analysis of the internal and external structures, the coherence of the argument, the articulation between the chapters, the construction of the characters or the verisimilitude of the plot, among other aspects. The same happens with an academic or essay text, with the variants of the case. But once these decisions are made, there is another type of correction for which neither the author nor the editor are usually trained. We refer to the orthotypographical correction.
DRAFTING OF TEXTS
Whatever the field in which we work, writing plays a fundamental role. Either when developing a website where we offer our products or services; In the composition of a brochure, in the writing of an infomercial article or in the elaboration of content related to our specialty, we will have to achieve to put in writing in a clear, simple and attractive way what we want to communicate.
For this reason, it is a pity to spoil a large investment in design, programming, advertising or other items for neglecting a crucial aspect such as the writing of the texts with which we will accompany our message.
In most cases it is a mistake to think that “we can do it” just for the sake of writing, when we lack the experience and training to write the texts that explain and frame our project. We run the risk of producing too short texts that do not give an account of what we want to transmit or that are too extensive, that overwhelm the user.
Therefore, I recommend leaving the writing in professional hands, who can interpret what they want to communicate and find the best way to put those contents in writing, through a wording that enhances the project to which it is linked.
Orthographic correction involves adjusting the text to current regulations in matters of spelling, grammar and syntax. This correction is complemented by typographical correction: which implies a “word by word” reading to detect and correct possible typing errors that are overlooked in a more global reading. (For example, in the previous sentence I wrote badly, purposely, “word”, could you notice it?). A text, however many readings you have, abounds in these involuntary typing errors.
The orthotypographical correction is carried out by trained professionals specialized in this task, who keep up to date on all the novelties of the Spanish language. This type of correction does not replace the detected errors, but it signals them to leave the last word to the author of the text (since some could be done consciously to build some style feature).
The style and orthotypographical corrections are the final “varnishing and polishing”: they make the text have its best finish and reach its maximum brightness.
